First Gen./First Post

Hey there.

If you are like me, you stumbled across some information given to you either by your counselor, advisor, teacher, friend, Facebook page, etc. about going to college (either that, or you are in college and you are fed up with the social barriers between you and your fellow peers because of one mere difference that truly changes everything).

But its not just about you going to college.

It is about you being a first generation student who is pursuing college.

According to this definition from Chapman University, a first generation college student is described one whose ¨parent(s)/legal guardian(s) have not completed a bachelor's degree at a four-year college or university...This means that you are the first in your family to attend a four-year college/university to attain a bachelor's degree¨.

Additionally, it does not matter what color your skin is to be a first generation college student either. Just put plain and simply: your parents/guardians did not receive a degree at the collegiate level i.e., they never enrolled in college (doesn't just have to be a four year either, but it usually is). So many people may fall under this category.

So, do you think you fit in? I know that I do. Before I get onto a different topic, let me formally introduce myself. For now, I will be using a screen name: E. I am not comfortable with sharing my identity quite yet, but perhaps over time, when I am older, I shall. For now, refer to me as such, and let me be known as such.

The purpose of this blog is to connect first generation college students who may feel left out in the institutions of higher learning that they are currently attending, or even during their journey to higher education has no idea nor the resources of where to begin. I can be an online resource to bridge the gap for you all.

Meanwhile, I shall be giving (most likely) very sparse, informative, and hopefully hilarious accounts of my journey as a first generation college student at university that has yet to be named. I hope you can travel with me, and get a true look of what university life is like.

Before you begin on this journey with me, I suggest that you take a look at my biography so that you get to know me a little better. I promise I won't bite.

In the mean time, adieu. I hope to be speaking to all of you soon. <3

-E.
